Happy, Healthy and Ready to Learn

Integrated 27 month reviews

In Hackney we are working together to ensure all our children access a high quality developmental review at 2-2 ½ years. This review is an opportunity for parents and carers to discuss their child’s progress with speech, general development, healthy eating, behaviour, toilet training, sleep, immunisations, vision and dental care. As it is critically important to ensure that the review makes the greatest possible contribution to improving children’s outcomes and reducing inequalities, the information on these pages has been designed to help health and early years professionals to provide the best possible service.

Eat Better Start Better in Hackney

Information and tools are available to assist in implementing Eat Better, Start Better, the healthy eating element of Hackney's integrated approach to ensuring that all children in the early years are happy, healthy and ready to learn. Approximately 70% of Hackney Early Years settings have already engaged with this programme which is a huge achievement.

Updated 'Eat Better Start Better' documents, guidance and sample menus

Children's Food Trust (CFT) closed at the end of September. Action for Children have taken on and re-branded the EBSB Voluntary Food and Drink Guidelines for Early Years Settings in England. These guidelines can now be downloaded or printed from the Action for Children website.

Key changes include:

  • The guidelines now cover food provision for infants 6-12 months in addition to the previous guidance of 1-5 years
  • Fruit juice is no longer recommended (even diluted fruit juice)

New example menus and recipes have been published to help early years providers plan healthy, tasty meals inline with the EBSB guidelines. The resources have been jointly developed by the Department for Education, the Department of Health and Public Health England, with advice from a panel of early years and nutrition experts including the British Nutrition Foundation.

It has also been announced that The British Dietetic Association will be taking over management of the online learning modules and the Let's Get Cooking programmes.
