Hola! Bienvenido a Spanish in Hackney
Hackney is carrying out pioneering work in the teaching of Spanish across all primary and secondary schools. The Headteachers agreed to teach Spanish as the first foreign language in all schools. This is to ensure that pupils develop a deep understanding of one language and to make the transfer to secondary school smoother.
While the national requirement is for children to learn a language at school in Key Stage 2 and Key Stage 3, we encourage schools to start by doing songs and fun language activities with younger children.
Our vision for Spanish
To develop a language offer which is ambitious and inclusive in order to recognise and celebrate the languages of children in Hackney with a special focus on Spanish as the main taught language.
We will do this by working collaboratively and in partnership across the entire family of schools to sustain and evolve a high-quality languages offer that ensures excellence, equity and inclusivity for all and will be a beacon of good practice in the UK.
Our objectives
- To implement and promote the teaching of Spanish in all primary and secondary schools in Hackney
- To ensure a coherent and smooth transition from primary and secondary school
- To increase the numbers of pupils continuing with Spanish in Key Stage 4 and 5 and to attain high standards
- To recognise and celebrate all the languages spoken in Hackney schools
