Overview
For the past three years Hackney schools have transformed their reading culture through the use of the Hackney Reading Champions programme.
The Reading Champions programme, designed by the Hackney literacy team, aims to build a strong reading culture through pupil-led initiatives.
The approach centres on pupils working independently as leaders of reading, with support from their school. By empowering students to be Reading Champions we aim to make "booktalk" the norm and foster a genuine love for reading for all children.
The programme:
- creates pupil leaders of reading and enriches the reading culture within schools
- promotes a peer-led system to motivate other children to read
- develops children’s understanding of different genres and authors
- creates a platform for pupil's to share opinions
- builds confidence and independence in team working and leadership
Watch our programme leads and children talk about the impact of the Reading Champions.
