Hackney Diverse Curriculum

Overview

Hackney’s approach to curriculum diversity is a core component of its commitment to being an anti-racist borough. We work to ensure that educational content reflects the borough’s multicultural population and addresses systemic inequalities.

Initially developed by Hackney teachers and staff for all Hackney educational settings, it soon became clear that there was a much wider appetite for the resources, with requests from across the UK and internationally.

About the curriculum

The Hackney Diverse Curriculum is a suite of planning materials, teaching resources and staff training to support educators in cultivating a rich and diverse curriculum that reflects the communities they teach in.

The work began with The Black Contribution resources, designed to teach Black history and demonstrate the contributions that Black people have made to the UK. They include lesson plans and resources spanning early years through to Key Stage 4, on topics such as ‘The Windrush Generation’, ‘British Identity’, ‘Diversity in Science’, and ‘Activism’.

More resources have been developed, focused on decolonising and diversifying curricula. This includes staff training materials that offer increased understanding and practical strategies for settings to implement.

"I am proud to present Hackney's Diverse Curriculum, and would like to thank the diligent and passionate work of our teachers for this rich and insightful curriculum.

We welcome other boroughs or educators to access the Diverse Curriculum to adapt and use within their own teaching.

We look forward to hearing back from how the work resonates with both teachers and students and look forward to building upon this work in the future.”

Cllr Anntoinette Bramble, Deputy Mayor of Hackney

“I am an Equity, Diversity and Inclusion System Leader with over 20 years’ experience in education. This experience ensures my understanding of curriculum design, implementation, and impact is firmly rooted in classroom practice and senior leadership.

At Hackney Education, I support schools and multi-academy trusts to strengthen inclusive practice, curriculum integrity, and leadership accountability. My work is grounded in the principles of the Hackney Diverse Curriculum, which I advocate as a rigorous framework for delivering an ambitious, representative, and coherent curriculum that reflects the communities schools serve.”

Debra Robinson, System Leader for Diversity and Inclusion, Hackney Education
