A guide to Hackney’s 10x10 programme

Every child deserves a childhood filled with exploration, adventure, and rich learning experiences. The Hackney 10x10 programme is designed around a simple yet ambitious goal: to support every child in Hackney to complete 10 fundamental activities by the time they are 10 years old.

Beyond creating fond memories, the 10x10 programme aims to boost physical, emotional, and social wellbeing. By taking part, pupils build essential life skills, discover new passions, explore their local community, and nurture a strong sense of identity and belonging within Hackney.

The 10 activities

  1. Engage in exercise
  2. Have a musical experience
  3. Learn to swim
  4. Take part in drama and performing arts
  5. Visit the seaside and the countryside
  6. Experience museums, theatres, galleries and heritage sites
  7. Take part in camping trips and overnight residentials
  8. Learn to ride a bike
  9. Take part in debating
  10. Use a library

What’s in the teacher resource pack?

To help schools embed the 10x10 initiative effortlessly into their curriculum and extracurricular activities, primary schools across Hackney have been provided with comprehensive resource packs. These packs contain practical tools to plan, track, and celebrate pupil engagement:

  • 10x10 journey booklets - dedicated booklets for children aged 5 to 10 to record their individual achievements, complete with links to Key Stage learning objectives
  • 10x10 inclusive journey booklet - tailored specifically for pupils attending special schools or those with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND)
  • Implementation plan and toolkit - includes slide decks, pupil and parent/carer questionnaires, case study templates, and termly review templates to help monitor progress
  • 10x10 display maps - visual maps to track group achievements and inspire pupils
  • The 10x10 reading list - a curated spreadsheet featuring picture books, chapter books, graphic novels, and non-fiction tied to each of the 10 activities
