DBS checks for individuals

How to get a DBS check

Individuals cannot apply directly to the DBS for their own Standard or Enhanced DBS check.

However, as a Local Authority, Hackney Education is able to apply for a Standard or Enhanced check on your behalf, as long as:

  • The role you are undertaking meets DBS eligibility criteria
  • You are able to visit our offices in Hackney with originals of your identity documents, if the Digital ID process fails

Standard checks are £21.50 and enhanced checks £49.50, plus administration fees of only £33 for individuals (excluding VAT).

Further guidance is below, but please email dbs@hackney.gov.uk or call 020 8820 7301 to discuss whether we are able to help.

Eligibility

Not all roles are eligible. This will depend on the nature of the role and/or where it is based. Most people who are eligible will be working with children or vulnerable adults, and/or their place of work could provide the potential for interaction with these vulnerable groups (e.g. care homes, nurseries and schools).

Verification of identity

Before we can submit your application, we must also be able to verify your identity and current address. The combination of documents you can use is outlined on the DBS website (such as a Passport or Driving Licence), but you need to be able to visit our office in Hackney, E8 1DY so we can see the original documents and confirm your identity against photographic evidence on the accepted documents.

Note: If you meet the DBS eligibility criteria but live outside Hackney or the surrounding area, we suggest that you contact your own Local Authority to see if they can help.

Testimonial

"It’s so helpful to have a service that can process DBS applications on behalf of freelancers. The process was straightforward and quick, and Hackney Learning Trust staff were very helpful throughout. My DBS came through in just a few days. Thank you!"
Katy Bignold, East London Music Therapy Ltd
