Hackney Poets of the Future Competition for KS1 and KS2

2021 competition details

Hackney Education and the Hackney School Board hosted a poetry competition for KS1 and KS2 children. The competition was inspired by a talk from author Joseph Coelho. This was a free CPD event for all Hackney schools. Watch the event on YouTube until 7 November.

Competition theme

Children were asked to write a poem with the theme of ‘Belonging in Hackney' and written in the style of Joseph Coelho's M.O.R.E.R.A.P.S poem. The following resources could be used in school to support the writing of poetry and the poetry competition:

How to enter the competition

The competition is now closed.

Please select a maximum of 2 poems from KS1 and 2 poems from KS2 to enter. 

The poems must: 

  • be written on white, unlined A4 paper
  • be written in dark ink (eg, black pen), dark pencil or typed in no smaller than font size 18
  • include an illustration 

The closing date is Friday 25th November.

Winners will be announced by Friday 10th December.

How and where to send the poems 

Follow these instructions to send the poems:

1. Scan each poem and name it using the following naming convention: School.Year Group.Child's Initials. For example: 'HolyCrossSchool.Y5.RC'. 

2. Download and complete an information sheet for each poem. 

3. Attach the scanned poems and completed information sheets to an email and send it to Rosie Condon.

On the information sheet, you must provide:

  • the title or first line of the poem
  • the school's name
  • the child's name
  • the child's year group
  • a contact email address an adult in the school

Keep the original poems and a member of our staff will collect them from your school. 

Competition prize

There are prizes for the top three entrants and their schools. 

Entrants will receive:

  • a copy of a Joseph Coelho book
  • their poem framed and displayed in local library
  • their poem featured on the Hackney Services for Schools website

Schools will receive:

  • a voucher to spend at the Pages of Hackney bookshop
