Information about Measles

Measles cases are rising across England and in London. Hackney is at particularly high risk of outbreaks as it has the lowest rate of MMR vaccine uptake in the country.

Measles is a serious illness; between 20% and 40% of affected cases can require hospital admission. In rare cases, tragically, measles can be fatal. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has declared a national incident following a large measles outbreak in the West Midlands.

An incident has also been declared for London due to increasing cases and outbreaks across the capital.

Parents should check their children are fully vaccinated with 2 MMR doses, by checking their red book or with their GP practice. Anyone not up-to-date with their vaccines should make an appointment with their GP as soon as possible.

  • Go to the health protection page for information on symptoms, where to get vaccines and what to do if you have a confirmed or suspected case of measles.
  • View the NHS Website (Measles Symptoms).
